Two UNESCO listings in one day, an hour from Ljubljana. In the morning, you walk through the Škocjan Caves, which hold one of the largest known underground canyons in the world. In the afternoon, you visit Lipica, founded in 1580 and the original home of the Lipizzaner breed, including the classical riding show.

This is a scheduled departure in a small group, up to 8 people in one van, with a licensed English-speaking guide. Guaranteed departures.

Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site

This is the cave system on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and you walk it rather than ride.

The walk takes about two hours and follows the Reka river deep underground, through chambers that keep opening up as you go. The path crosses the Cerkvenik bridge high above the river, at the point where it disappears underground into one of the largest known underground canyons in the world. It stays around 12 °C down there all year, which is a relief on a hot day, so bring a light jacket. The park's own guides lead the underground section.

Lipica, home of the Lipizzaner horses

Lipica, home of the Lipizzaner horses

The Lipizzaner breed began here in 1580, and the horses are still bred and trained on the same Karst pastures.

You visit the stables and the paddocks, where the foals are born dark and only turn white as they grow, and you watch the classical riding school perform in the arena. The breeding and training tradition is on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Lipica sets its own programme, and we confirm what is running before you travel.

Why choose the Škocjan Caves & Lipica Stud Farm in a day?

  • Two UNESCO listings in one day: the Škocjan Caves and the Lipizzaner breeding tradition at Lipica, both within an hour of Ljubljana.
