Our self-drive tour will help you make the best of your independent travel though Slovenia. At your own pace, just the way you like it best!
Your self-drive tour includes the detailed tour organization and accommodation. If you wish to rent a car, we will arrange that for you. Entrance fees are not included in the package, so you can modify your visits to different sights along the way. Upon your request we will make reservations for attractions visits, restaurants, wine tasting and other.
The Self-drive tour will help you explore all the most fascinating sights in Slovenia’s southeast and discover some hidden off-the-beaten track natural beauties. The tour is designed to help you experience all the highlights of Southeastern Slovenia: beauty of pristine nature, exquisite taste of local culinary and wines, thrill of adventure sports, freshness of the forests, wealth of local traditions, might of the castles, healing powers of thermal spring, vibrance of the capital. Forget about the everyday stress and recharge your batteries in one unforgettable week.
All the below listed activities are optional. Don’t feel like spending the day at the spa? Simply skip it and do what feels right for you that day.
The tour starts in the vibrant contemporary city of Ljubljana. Take the first day to get to know the capitals’ greatest attractions on 2-hour walking tour. Strolling by the river and through the streets of the old city centre is the best way to feel the relaxed vibe of the city. Make your way to the Ljubljana Caste on the hill and take part in special experience called The Time Machine. It’s a completely different and exciting way to experience history. Change the perspective of the city on a boat tour on Ljubljanica river.
Leave Ljubljana early and head to Ribnica. On the way pay attention to the mighty Turjak castle. Visit the permanent exhibition of wooden ware and pottery in the Ribnica Museum that is focused on handicraft and cottage industries tradition, very typical of the region. Meat lovers will appreciate next activity. Make your taste buds sing by tasting Biosing home sausages, made using the ancient natural methods of careful curing and drying. Next on the route is Kočevsko, the region of mysterious forests; virgin forest Krokar is a part of UNESCO World Heritage list. Spend some time relaxing or doing water sports by Kočevje Lake.
Drive from Kočevje to the Kolpa river, also known as one of the most beautiful rivers in Slovenia. Those who like mystery and historic secrets visit the Škrilj Bunker, hidden 80 meters below the surface. It was built by former Yugoslav president Tito during the Cold War. Spend the rest of the day in Osilnica doing some activities like rafting, archery or just walking in nature and relaxing by the river.

You have a full day to explore the beauty of Kolpa river – a warm and clean river – popular among locals and visitors alike. Enjoy the day to the fullest – relax, swim, and sunbathe or test the water with canoe or organised rafting. It is worthwhile to visit the magnificent Kostel Castle built on a pointed hill. The second largest castle complex in Slovenia is partly renovated and rich in cultural content.
Overnight Vinica (by the Kolpa river)
Get ready to do some driving today. Make a first stop at the picture-perfect source of the Krupa river in Bela Krajina. For some history head to Otok village to admire the aircraft C-47, displayed there as a reminder of a multinational operations that saved hundreds of lives during some of the darkest days of World War II. Feeling hungry already? Continue to Črnomelj where you can learn how to make a typical traditional flatbread called »Belokranjska pogača«. End the day with a dose of adrenaline. Test your courage in Adrenaline Park Podzemelj, one of the safest parks in Slovenia. Optional: you can add an extra day in Dolenjske Toplice and have a special experience the forest of Kočevsko.
Overnight Dolenjske Toplice
Start with visit to Novo mesto. It’s situated on a sharp, scenic bend of the Krka River, with its tranquil turquoise waters running through the town. Further along the route take the time to visit the lovely Otočec castle on a tiny island in the middle of the Krka River. Get a closer look of the castle with a drink in the courtyard. On Saturdays is not unusual to see bride and groom, since the castle is a popular wedding venue. Next, drive to Kostanjevica na Krki - the smallest and one of the oldest towns in the country, situated on an islet. Don’t miss the excellent Božidar Jakac Art Museum! If you feel you need some more company of trees, visit the forest Krakov, the biggest lowland flood forest with oaks and hornbeam in Slovenia.
Overnight Brežice/ Čatež
It’s castle day! When visiting the region of Posavje, no matter which direction you take, there’s a castle to welcome you. First, start by visiting the Brežice castle known for its stunning fresco-filled Knights’ Hall. Even famous Jackie Chan included it in his film God's armour. Not far away the Bizeljsko castle on a rocky hill includes a superb wine cellar. You can tour the castle and taste top-quality predicate wines and wine specialties. Next, in the heart of Kozjanski park stands the most beautiful medieval castle in the country – Podsreda castle. A beauty that should not be missed! Continue to Brestanica to marvel at Rajhenburg castle for some more history, culture and art. End the castle tour in the birth town of the US first lady. Besides the rich history of the Sevnica castle, you can enjoy great views and relax with a drink at the castle cafe.
Explore Sevnica and take another walk to the castle or dedicate the whole day to pampering at the Roman Spring in the beautiful surroundings of Rimske Terme. The ancient Romans built the first swimming pools with hot and cold water at the today’s location of Rimske Terme. If you don’t feel like spending the day in spa, you can alternately visit Celje – a city that boasts with impressive castle on the hill.
Overnight Rimske Toplice
On the last day of the tour visit Litija, the Heart of Slovenia area. You can opt to take a bike tour, visit the nearby adventure park or visit the archaeological site in Vače, where the Vače Situla - one of the oldest old Slovenian symbols from the 6th century BC was found. Another interesting activity is to take a guided tour of the Sitarjevec mine, where you go for a stroll down the export mine tunnel and learn about history of mining. Then, on your way to Ljubljana you can make a stop at Renaissance castle Bogenšperk and at the Cistercian monastery located in the village of Stična.
After breakfast it is time to say goodbye.
