What to expect

Explore Slovenia through literature and discover its rich and diverse natural, historical and cultural heritage. Recommended book for this tour is Drago Jančar’s I saw her that night, and optional books include Farewell to Arms (Ernest Hemingway) and Veronica decides to die (Paulo Coelho). Visit the places described in the books, but go beyond the books and get to know the motives and driving forces of the authors. The tour prides itself to be the best choice for book lovers in Slovenia.

  • Itinerary

    • Arrive to Ljubljana, check into the hotel, and take a sightseeing walking tour of the city. Learn about local writers and poets, discover where they lived, which pubs they frequented and where they got their inspiration. We are promising an intimate insight into their lives and works whilst discovering the city’s finest historical and architectural attractions. Read Paulo Coelho's Veronica decides to die.

    • Visit lake Bled, the most famous Alpine resort in Slovenia and take a pletna rowing boat to the only island in Slovenia. Visit the medieval castle perched on a cliff above the lake, with the best views of the lake, and imagine literary heavyweights like Arthur Miller and Agatha Christie drawing inspiration here. Visit Strmol Castle, where the Hribar couple (described in Jančar’s I saw her That Night) lived. The castle also won the title Unique castle of the Year 2018 (named by Travel and Hospitality magazine from London) and it is one of only two castles in Slovenia with original furnishing and equipment. Enjoy a guided tour through the castle and teleport yourself right into the novel's setting.

    • Follow in the fictional footsteps of Ernest Hemingway (Farewell to Arms) and visit Soča river valley, one of the most beautiful Alpine valley in Europe, yet one of the bloodiest battlefields of the First World War. Stop at a serene spot by the river and read Soča, a poem written by the prophetic local poet Simon Gregorčič, and contemplate the extent of human folly. Visit Kobarid Museum of World War I, which provides a deeper and hands-on sense of history of this area. Enjoy this stunning mixture of pristine nature and colossal history.

    • Free time in Ljubljana, Optional sightseeing walking tour of marginal Ljubljana to see the artist ghettos, Communist era neighborhoods and hidden places only known to locals. Recommended book is the recently translated The end. And again by Dino Bauk.
