What to expect
We will plan the cycling route, book your accommodation, transport your luggage and provide you with a detailed road book to get the most of your travel through Slovenia, from sightseeing and leisure to food and drinks.
Following Drava / Drau river you will ride along the foothills of the green Pohorje hills to get to Maribor. Slovenia's second biggest city deserves at least an afternoon, if not a full day (check out ur suggestions on what to see and do in Maribor). After leaving Maribor the landscape turns to Pannonian plain with wheat fields surrounded by picturesque hilly vineyards.
Discover the stories of the castles along the way, count the hydroelectic plants (perhaps visit one of them?), and enjoy excellent Slovenian wines. You will all enjoy local cousine and we will give you plenty of recommendations to taste delicious local food.
Why explore Slovenia with Slovenia Explorer? All our bicycle tours were designed by our founder Gregor Födransperg – Fedr, a travel writer and a photographer, and one of the most recognizable Slovenian bicycle travellers. He wrote two books about his bicycle travels and contributed numerous articles in Slovenian newspapers and magazines, including the National Geographic. He toured extensively by bicycle - aside from traversing Europe and cycling all around Slovenia, he cycled around the Mediterranean sea for a year, visiting the Balkans, Middle east and north Africa. He also cycled across Africa for six months, from Capetown to Kilimanjaro.
Fedr is a true expert on Slovenia. He is passionate about his own country and he is proud to know it like the back of his hand. Aside from knowledge of Slovenia's history and current affairs, Fedr has connections and acquaintances in all the right places. Explore Slovenia with Fedr and you will visit places that most Slovenians only heard about. You will also visit many places that most Slovenians haven't even heard about!
DRAVOGRAD - RADLJE OB DRAVI
Start your adventure at the Austrian border and ride through Dravograd, the administrative center of this region and the nominal start of the Drava Bike Path in Slovenia. Listen to some of 250 different bird species nesting around Dravograd lake. Look out for traditional timber rafts and stop at Bukovje baroque mansion, an eclectic museum with interesting collections, rich history and a magnificent park just waiting for bicycle travellers. Make your way to Radlje and its natural natural swimming pool, which is cleaned by microorganisms instead of chemicals.
Overnight Radlje ob Dravi
Our recommendation: Arrive a day before your tour starts and spend the night right on the border between Slovenia and Austria.
RADLJE OB DRAVI - MARIBOR
Rise above the river, hit the forested hills of Pohorje and fill your lungs with fresh, pine-scented air. Ride to Maribor, Slovenia's second largest city. Park your bike and explore the town center or just lounge in one of the riverside cafes.
We recommend an extra day in Maribor to discover its old quarters, museums and galleries, performances and festivals, as well as its gourmet culinary treasures and excellent wines.
MARIBOR - PTUJ
Ride through wheat fields, admire the sunflowers and look at the solitary hills above the Pannonian plain and try to guess which could be the legendary burial mound of Attila the Hun, who was killed and buried around here. End the day in charming Ptuj, the oldest town in Slovenia, with rich ancient Roman and Medieval heritage.
PTUJ - ORMOŽ
Ride along the river and discover the largest lake in Slovenia, a heaven for birdwatchers. Discover the Pannonian plain and explore small villages as you cycle through them.
We recommend returning to Ptuj via circular route and spending another night in Ptuj. You could also take a train to Maribor and end your tour there, crowning it perhaps with dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant.
End of tour (optional overnight Ptuj / Maribor)
