LAKE BLED

Visit lake Bled, the most famous Alpine resort in Slovenia and take a pletna rowing boat to the only island in Slovenia. Visit the medieval castle perched on a cliff above the lake, with the best views of the lake, and imagine literary heavyweights like Arthur Miller and Agatha Christie drawing inspiration here. Visit Strmol Castle, where the Hribar couple (described in Jančar’s I saw her That Night) lived. SOČA RIVER VALLEY

Follow in the fictional footsteps of Ernest Hemingway (Farewell to Arms) and visit Soča river valley, one of the most beautiful Alpine valley in Europe, yet one of the bloodiest battlefields of the First World War. Stop at a serene spot by the river and read Soča, a poem written by the prophetic local poet Simon Gregorčič, and contemplate the extent of human folly.
