Head west from Ljubljana and visit Škofja Loka, one of the best preserved medieval towns in Slovenia. Find out more about extraordinary efforts of the partisan movement during WWII at the partisan hospital Franja, located in a picturesque gorge up in the forested Škofja Loka & Cerkljansko hills.
Often mentioned as the most beautiful medieval town in Slovenia, Škofja Loka makes for a must-see stop while in Slovenia. Based at the confluence of two rivers, Škofja Loka’s old town will charm you with its fortified river banks, bridges, squares, and architecture that kept their medieval feel. Walking through the streets of this little gem offers great photo opportunities of the small winding alleys and colourful facades.

Mounted above the old town of Škofja Loka, is the Škofja Loka castle which was built for the bishops (=škof in Slovenian) who gave the town its name. It dates back to the 13th century and it now houses a museum with archeology, history, ethnography and natural collections presenting the region in detail. The castle can be reached from the old town via small but not overly steep paths which allow you to ascend above the red roofs of Škofja Loka.

Slovenian WWII history is remarkably broad and there are many places with heritage dating back to that period, but no other is such a testament to human resilience and bravery as the Franja partisan hospital. Partially reconstructed after the 2007 floods, the partisan hospital lies in a narrow gorge of Pasice, which offers a glimpse into the struggles of the people who founded it, as well as the wounded who were treated there between 1943 and 1945. It carries the name of the partisan doctor Franja Bojc Bidovec and consists of 16 barracks, all of which can be visited today.
