History of Bled
The town of Bled is a thousand years old. It was established in 1004 by the German Emperor Henrik II. The first visitiors to Bled were pilgrims from Carniola and Carinthia, who came to pray at the island church, wheras Bled started attracting tourists in the 19th century, after a Swiss-style bathing resort was opened here.
Lake Bled is a good place for swimming and it is a major rowing centre, with important rowing competitions being held every year. Underwater enthusiasts can enjoy scuba diving or snorkeling, as Lake Bled is famous for its huge catfish.
Bled is also a good base to start hiking in the eastern part of the Julian Alps, including the Triglav National Park.
Near-by Sava river is a good place to experience rafting, kayaking, canoeing, hydrospeed/riverboarding or canyoning.
